Modern Family, The night kicked off with Comedy categories, opening with an upset from Ty Burrell, for for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. He also won the same award back in 2011. Co-star Jesse Tyler Ferguson is no 0-5.
Projected victors, Allison Janney (MOM, Supporting Actress), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep, Lead Actress), and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory, Lead Actor) prevailed in their respective categories for their Outstanding comedic performances. Broadcast network television managed to clean up in the Comedy categories, with ABC claiming 3 wins with Modern Family (Supporting Actor, Comedy Directing, Comedy Series) and CBS with 1 win for Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory, Lead Actor). This victory marks Parsons' fourth consecutive win in the category. Reminder: He already receives a pay $1 million per episode for his work on Big Bang. Julia Louis Dreyfus won her fifth Emmy Award, and her third consecutive for Veep; while Allison Janney claimed her sixth Emmy, this time for her humorous performance on CBS multi-cam, MOM.
For the miniseries/TV movie awards, triple hourlong "TV movie", Sherlock cleaned up, with Martin Freeman taking Supporting Actor in a Mini/Movie, surprisingly defeating all four other men from The Normal Heart (including Matt Bomer, who was visually stunned, himself) and Benedict Cumberbatch winning Lead Actor in a Mini/Movie, canceling out Oscar-winner, Billy Bob Thornton, of Fargo, and Oscar-nominee, Mark Ruffalo, for The Normal Heart.
The ladies of American Horror Story: Coven really surprised. Oscar-winners, Kathy Bates and Jessica Lange prevailed for their respective roles. Bates was completely stunned to hear her name announced as the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie, for her performance as a fierce, racist witch suffering from jet lag of time warp. Jessica Lange's victory for Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie proved bittersweet, considering the coming year will be her last on the FX anthology.
The Drama categories proceeded by the book, with past winners, Aaron Paul, Anna Gunn, and Bryan Cranston all winning for their respective performances in the final season of Breaking Bad. Paul won Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the third time, Anna Gunn won Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the second consecutive time, and Bryan Cranston won his fourth Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
2-time previous winner, Julianna Margulies, took one home for Network television, winning Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her role on the recently reinvigorated The Good Wife. Margulies defeated 2-time champ, Claire Danes. This marks Margulies' second win in the category, previously winning in 2011, also for her Good Wife role.
And the night ended as usual with Modern Family and Breaking Bad claiming the top two awards, Outstanding Comedy Series and Outstanding Drama Series. Modern Family now ties Frasier for the most consecutive wins in the category, a five peat.
Some highlights of the night came from Seth Meyers solid performance as main host, Billy Eichner running rapidly down the sidewalks of Los Angeles, loudly screaming everything that was possibly wrong with the Television Academy and the Primetime Emmy Awards, and Julia Roberts, who was arguably the best-dressed of the night, presenting Lead Actor in a Drama Series, with a series of running gags throughout her speech.
Well, she is Julia Roberts.
