EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED
Who knows... maybe NATAS switched up the winners list this year? We'll never know the reason why Sunday was such a night full of shockers and snubs and upsets and more and more.
Probably the only expected 2014 Daytime Emmy came from Billy Miller, former starlet of The Young and the Restless, who took a big move by submitting in the Lead Acting category this year, being a previous 2-time winner of the Supporting Actor award. Miller gave such a poignant performance; we all clamored for his well-deserved victory. To be truthful, at this point in the ceremony, I was expecting Jason Thompson to upset and bring it home. He should have it in the bag next year, along with co-star Teresa Castillo for their stillborn storyline.
Eric Martsolf launched the night of upsets, winning for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, the first of all acting awards that Days of our Lives was up for that they won. Touching the audience with a little backstory and even some comedy, Eric pointed out how Days was more than welcoming to "...a boy from Passions".
Amelia Heinle came through as another surprise. She wasn't a certain frontrunner, as this was her very first nomination in over 20 years of being a soap actress. (Starting on Loving in 1993, Heinle then moved onto All My Children before joining Y&R. She has been with Y&R for over 9 years.) No one will deny that Elizabeth Hendrickson and/or Jane Elliot deserved the Emmy, but, also, no one can deny that Heinle's was impressive. I, myself, was surprised at how much her reel showcased her talent, so I am satisfied she finally got recognition for being one of the longest-running overlooked actresses in the industry.
More upsets piled in in different forms, specifically in the Talk and Non-scripted categories. The People's Court defeated Judge Judy; Steve Harvey topped returning champ Dr. Oz for Informative Talk Show, making it the first time The Dr. Oz Show lost the category in 4 years. For Talk Show Host, a tie occurred, between Mehmet Oz
(Dr. Oz) and the host, Katie Couric, of the now defunct Katie (Syndicated); a similar thing happened last year when Ricki Lake took it, for hosting her short-lived, then cancelled, The Ricki Lake Show.
The Directing Team & Writing Team categories were presented by Kim Matula, Emmy-winners, Darin Brooks, Scott Clifton, Sharon Case, Camryn Grimes. The short-lived web revival of One Life to Live (TOLN) was awarded the Emmy for it's Team of seasoned directors, Jim Mitwell and Gary Donatelli, who directed OLTL's online pilot (which was submitted). This marked the first time OLTL won the Emmy for its Directing since 2008. Mitwell gave the acceptance speech, even proclaiming that she wished "we had three lives to live." Cute.
The Writing Team of The Young and the Restless were top honors.

Co-head writer, Shelly Altman, of the head-writing-threesome of Y&R (Shelly Altman, Tracey Thomson, Jean Passanante) accepted the statuette. Nothing more to say.
Younger Actor & Younger Actress were surely gone by fast-and-loosely (as Melodie Aikels, of Daytime Confidential says). Chandler Massey went with a three-peat with THREE minute reel. Voters probably saw his name, recognized it, and just voted for it. Everyone knows this belonged to Bryan Craig (General Hospital), who is truly thee best youth actor in daytime at the moment. No need to rant, however, because Craig surely has many Emmy nominations & wins in his future. This one is sure to make it far.
Hunter-Haley King won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Younger Actress. Her reel was alright; it was a little long, way too over-the-top for my personal taste. I fully expected Kristen to two-peat, or Missal to really surprise. Who knows, hopefully Cartini decide to snatch up Kelley Missal; that one's also sure to make it far.
By this time, Frank and Ron (Showrunners, General Hospital) were probably like, "ha, fuck it." Whoops. This article is supposed to be clean.
Cut to Lead Acting. Short story, Billy Miller won, as expected. Eileen Davidson surprised us all and was finally recognized for her full-out, drag-out, campy performance of Kristen DiMera on Days. It was pretty shocking, considering Heather Tom submitted her best reel ever for consideration this year. Eileen is overdue for recognition of her wonderful work; it was a pleasant surprise for her to take home the gold, even if she claims she "shares it with Heather!"; what she proclaimed in her energetic acceptance talk.
The best moment of the night, or, perhaps, the best moment in Daytime Emmy history happened during one of the night's biggest eye-rolling moments, of The Young and the Restless winning Outstanding Drama Series. During Jill Phelps' inglorious speech, in which she proved every single hater wrong, Kathy Griffin sounded from the back "Jesus Christ Lady, wrap it up! We get it--you're young, you're restless! I swear if you thank your fucking dog!..."
Kathy Griffin was surely the bright spot of the entire awards ceremony; it'd be great to see her return to it next year, maybe with some Jill shade in her opening monologue...
And who could forget Griffin spilling the tea on Susan Lucci and Sarah Michelle Gellar? Definitely the night's best shade and best moment.
And who couldn't remember Kathy Griffin's ultimate tea spilling on La Lucci and Emmy-winning starlet Sarah Michelle Gellar? Amongst Kathy's other ultimate shades...
